Inspire Therapy for Sleep Apnea

Northwest Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine is proud to partner with The ENT Care Center in Barrington, IL to offer Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation therapy, a new treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea. Unlike CPAP, Inspire works from inside the body with the patient’s natural breathing process.

Inspire Therapy Can Help

Inspire Sleep Apnea Innovation provides an alternative to CPAP by treating the root cause of sleep apnea through a gentle stimulation of key airway muscles during sleep, allowing patients to sleep without a mask, hose or machine. You simply switch on your device before bed and let the technology do the work.

Inspire therapy is FDA approved and clinically proven to significantly reduce sleep apnea events and improve quality of life for the patient and their families.

An Inspire therapy-trained doctor will evaluate your overall health and perform a physical examination of your airway to determine if Inspire therapy might be a suitable CPAP alternative for you.

How Inspire Works

The Inspire system works completely inside your body with your natural breathing process to treat obstructive sleep apnea. While you are asleep, Inspire delivers mild stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve, a nerve that controls the movement of the tongue and other muscles in the airway. By stimulating the nerve, the tongue and other tissues move out of the airway so you can breathe during sleep.

Inspire therapy is controlled using the Inspire Sleep Remote. The Inspire Sleep Remote allows you to turn the therapy on and off, adjust stimulation strength, and pause stimulation during the night if needed.

Is Inspire Therapy Right for You?

You may be a candidate for Inspire therapy if you:

  • Have Moderate to Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Are Unable to Tolerate or Benefit from CPAP
  • Are Not Significantly Overweight
  • Are Over the Age of 22

The first step is to schedule a consultation with one of our Inspire Therapy-trained physicians to evaluate your overall health status and perform an examination of your airway anatomy to determine if Inspire therapy might be a suitable alternative for you.

Will My Insurance Cover it?

Inspire is covered by most major insurance providers, including Medicare. If you have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, are getting an inconsistent benefit from your CPAP or are struggling to use it, are over the age of 22, and are not significantly obese, it’s likely that you will qualify to utilize Inspire as a treatment. For those who have chosen Inspire, 90% of bed partners report a decline in snoring, if not an elimination of it and 79% of those armed with Inspire saw a reduction in sleep apnea events.

What to Expect with Inspire Therapy

Inspire therapy works inside the body with the patient’s natural breathing process. The system is placed under the skin during a short surgical procedure, typically in an outpatient setting under general anesthesia.

Patients can return to their regular diet and most activities of daily living immediately after the procedure.
